ENDER 3 S1 REVIEW

How many of you wished that Ender 3 series could print flexible filaments? How many of you wished to have an Ender 3 printer with automatic bed leveling? Creality has finally heard us and made Ender 3 S1, which gives us a direct drive extruder, a new bed platform, and CR touch for automatic bed leveling.

We all know that the Ender 3 series is the most popular printer series among smaller models. Last year Creality surprised us with Ender 3 V2 - a slickest looking printer, with a drawer for candies or tools if you prefer, a new color display, and a silent motherboard. This time we present to you an even better, bigger Ender 3 S1 with many improvements. To begin with, the most important feature about this Ender 3 is that it has a direct drive, double traction, and full metal extruder, two fundamental sensors - the filament detection sensor, and the automatic leveling sensor. The new assembly of the printer is designed in a way that allows the user to put together the parts and start printing in just 10 minutes. . It has a high precision Double-Z axis, two Z-axis motors, a new 32-bit motherboard with ultra-quiet drivers, and much more.

WHAT'S NEW?

1. DIRECT DRIVE EXTRUDER

An Extruder is the most important part of a 3D printer. Why? Because it pushes the filament through to the heated nozzle where it’s melted and extruded. All extruders have identical three parts and these are called the stepper motor, driver gear, and the idler. While the components of extruders are always the same, we have two different types of extruders: Bowden and Direct drive. The difference between the two is within the location of the extruder and how far the filament has to travel before it enters the heated nozzle. (for more follow this link).

Direct drive extruder has a smaller distance and retraction. Also, the extrusion commands are faster, which creates a more stable material deposition control, and consequently also higher resolution. This extra control and shorter route of the filament makes printing flexible and other special materials very easy and more likely to give us better results. Since the extruder and hot end are very close one to another, the force supplied by the extruder doesn't have to be as strong, meaning that there will be less probability of slipping filament via the hobbed bolt as the extruder will be more gentle on the filament.

2. PEI MAGNETIC BUILD PLATE

Ender 3S1 has a new printing surface- the PEI magnetic build plate. It is a lot stronger and more resistant than the old magnetic plate we get with Ender 3 PRO. This one resists higher temperatures and is more flexible, it is also removable and can stick to magnetics very well. It matches great with PLA, PETG, PEEK, ABS, ASA, TPU, and other filaments. With this plate, you won't need any tape,  glue, or shovel. It's easy to adhere to the printing surface, it's easy to remove the prints, just flex slightly to pop your print right off.

PEI is an excellent upgrade because it can withstand the numerous heat cycles that a 3D print bed goes through from print to print.

3. CR-TOUCH WITH A METAL PROBE

Since a lot of makers had problems with BL-touch and the plastic pin, Creality upgraded it and made CR-touch with a metallic sensor pin, which can't collide with the print bed because it is always automatically retracted. It is also more accurate than the BL-touch and looks different. The most important difference is in the sensor; CR-touch uses optical sensor technology to detect the position of the pin inside (BL-touch measures electromagnetic fields). This type of technology is very reliable and fast. The CR-Touch has a longer life and higher repeatability.

4. TWO Z-AXIS MOTORS

The Z-axis motor is responsible for the platform's movement along the Z-axis. On an Ender 3 printer, the X-axis gantry can sometimes lean because of the additional weight of the print head that is put on the Z rod or bearings on the one side as a result of the off-balance weight. This can affect the printing quality, it can create bed leveling problems, as the hot end can be at a different height along the X gantry if the gantry is tilted or wobbles. Wobbling can also lead to other problems like ringing.

With Ender 3 S1 you won't be having this type of problem, since having two -Z- axis motors with the threaded rods ensures the stability of the X-axis during print and can also reduce wear on the mechanical components.

5. DUAL Z-AXIS UPGRADE WITH PULLEY AND TIMING BELT

Besides the two Z-axis motors, we can also find a pulley and timing belt. This way the print will be even more precise and the extruder can move on the Z-axis evenly. This extra upgrade is very useful especially if you want to print faster.   Since the direct drive extruder is positioned near the hotend it means that there is a little bit more weight than on the other side. This way the pulley and the timing belt guarantees that the movement on the Z-axis is evenly and very precise.

6. 32-BIT MOTHERBOARD WITH ULTRA-SILENT DRIVERS

In this printer, we can find a 32-bit motherboard that is one of the best upgrades that Creality has made in the last year. The main job of the motherboard is to connect and control the mechanical and electrical parts of a 3D printer. This control board supervises everything that can be digitally manipulated, from the heaters, stepper motors, fans up to the thermistor bed and the thermistor nozzle. With this board, you get a special set of fans that control the temperatures of the drivers, so they won't get too hot. It also comes with STM32F103 microcontrollers that use the Cortex-M3 core, with a maximum CPU speed of 72 MHz. The silent drivers also guarantee the sound of the printer running below 50 dB.

7. ENDER 3 S1 POWER SUPPLY CREALITY

Power supply is the hidden box under the bed of Ender 3 S1, thanks to which your printer magically works 😊 It contains a rectifier circuit and a transformer that can process up to 24 volts and 350 Watt. This time Creality decided to make their own power supply for Ender 3 S1 with a shell made of an aluminum alloy, which has good compression resistance and effectively protects internal parts. It is also designed in a way so that the fan can effectively dissipate the heat, which makes it more safe and reliable. The transformer reduced the failure rate and ensures the stable operation of the power supply. The power supply model we can find in the Ender 3 S1 is CMS-350-24.

8. SENSOR FILAMENT/FILAMENT RUNOUT SENSOR

Imagine you've spent a long time designing the 3D model and setting up the printer. You make a few tests to find the optimal printing parameters, and now you start printing just before going to bed hoping to wake up to a freshly printed model. Well, without the sensor that is probably impossible.

The sensor filament helps us detect when your filament runs out during the printing process. The printer will stop working at the appropriate time and it will give us the chance to rescue the 3d model and to save the print quality.  The sensor will send the signal to the printer when the filament comes to the end of the spool and the Ender 3 S1 will pause the print job until we load the new spool. The automatic filament runout recognition is one of the most important additional functions of the printer.

CONCLUSION


Ender 3 S1 review went great. We've tested PLA, PETG, and TPU filaments and all the results were amazing! If you are looking for a cheap but efficient printer with a direct drive extruder, this one is for you. The printing speed is slower than the old Ender 3, but this way the printer maintains the accuracy and the quality of the print.

The Ender 3 S1 price is really user-friendly and for this price Creality truly gives us a lot to work with. The price at our shop will be 359 EUR and the release date will be someday around new years eve. Who knows, maybe Santa will surprise you this time :)
